 BEYOND THESE BARS
A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
By Gary Lloyd James

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So they told us we could not march
But we did it and for this, we were charged
Sitting here behind these men made bars
Trying to forget the harsh words, that was meant to leave scars
It's never easy finding the right words to say
I am placed in a situation where I am expected to lead the way
Wearing the hat of a mediator between Black and White
Has consume my thoughts and cause many sleepless nights
I had to be on the front line to lead this bus boycott
I have to be there for my people, because my people is all I have got
Left to ponder which road to take next
No time for sleep, no time to rest
I have got to remind my people to remain patient
Althought I am having a hard time selling
the method of non-violence
The authorities should know me after all this time
That when they arrest me my people won't be far behind
I know now what I was placed on this earth to do
To guide my people on the battlefield,
heling them to fight through
The hatred, the abuse, the inequality, the shame and remorse
If I am not careful this could back fire, and make matters worse
I know I won't always be around
Because one day my body will return to the ground
At which point I know my work will be done
Hoping to hear those wonderful words in heaven, 'well done'
Falling back to sleep I see that dream again
Where the fight between black and white had come to an end
What a sight, seeing myself holding hands as we sing
While listening to the sound of freedom as it rings…
